CONCERT INFORMATION

The repertoire for Chamber Choir is very varied and some is challenging but Halifax Chamber has a very broad membership and while the ability to sight read is beneficial it is not considerered essential as anyone with a love of the classical repertoire for chamber choir and has some singing ability is encouraged to join.

Halifax Chamber Choir meets for rehearsals on Tuesday evenings throughout the year 7.30-9.30pm in the Crossley Gallery, Dean Clough, Halifax. The choir performs in Halifax at least three times a year. The choir is currently directed by Aljosa Skorja (Josh) a Slovenian conductor and musicologist. He was the winner of the London Classical Soloists’ Conducting Competition in 2015 and joined Halifax Chamber Choir as musical director and conductor in the same year.

Due to family bereavement, David Baker is unable to accompany us in this concert. We are very grateful to Marc Murray from Bury Parish Church for stepping in at very late notice. Our sympathies are with David and his family and hope he will be with us again soon.

AUTUMN CONCERT 2024

HALIFAX MINSTER

SATURDAY 2nd NOVEMBER

Magnificat

John Rutter

Though he is perhaps best known for his carols and shorter works, John Rutter also has a number of large-scale works to his name including a setting of the Magnificat which was first performed in Carnegie Hall, New York, in 1990 when it was conducted by the composer. It received its UK première a year later in Coventry Cathedral and since then has become a popular work with choirs and choral societies throughout the UK. The choir will be accompanied by Halifax organist, Professor David Baker for this performance in Halifax Minster.

The Armed Man (A Mass for Peace)

Karl Jenkins

"The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace" by Karl Jenkins is a powerful and dramatic work which was commissioned by Leeds Royal Armouries Museum and dedicated to the victims of the Kosovo conflict in 1999. It is essentially an anti-war piece. Halifax Chamber Choir will perform the Choral Suite which was arranged by Karl Jenkins for chamber choir and is based on the Catholic Mass with the addition of a setting of a poem by Rudyard Kipling, "Hymn Before Action" which takes the form of a prayer by troops to God and to Mary on the eve of battle.
